Early last week we returned from a little trip to visit Devon's dad's side of the family at a beautiful beach house on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Each year since my father-in-Law passed away the family makes arrangements to get together for a little summer vacation so that all his kids can continue to spend time together. With everyone having such busy lives and being scattered across the country - from a step-son in Connecticut, daughter and grandson a few hours drive from Houston, a son and his partner in Washington D.C., and Devon and I here in Utah - it's quite the feat that my step-mother-in-law [that's quite the chain of hyphens!] can get us all together!
We spent 6 days in Texas and 3 nights at the beach house surrounded by family and old family friends who might as well be family. We played bocci ball on the beach and Mexican Train dominoes on the wrap-around deck with the salt-kissed breezed threatening to ruin our games -- and most always ruining our hair. We braved Shark Week to wade in the shallow warm water for hours on end with only a slight run in with a jellyfish to slow us down and even that wasn't so bad. What's a brief sting compared to the fun of a new story to tell/joking about how your husband wouldn't pee on you for the next little while?
All in all it was a lovely trip and we're so appreciative that Devon's step-mom takes the time to plan it out each year and that everyone involved makes the effort to travel hundreds or thousands of miles to be together.
With all this traveling in the past few weeks, I must say, while I often have it in my mind that Salt Lake isn't the place for me - not for the rest of my life anyway - the more I leave this place, the more I love coming back to it. ♥
Mornings at SLC Intl' can sure be pretty.
11 months since our wedding origami crane extravaganza and I've still got it!
There are dolphins out there!
I love when Devon shares favorite memories of his childhood with me - apparently seagulls love Cheetos as much as any 3rd grader I've ever met.
